6 Trends to Try This Spring

1. The Slip Dress

As we’ve seen this trend on style mavens like Rihanna, the slip dress is returning this spring stronger than ever. The continuation of this feminist dress shows how influential women are in fashion. Revealing this much skin is normally frowned upon, however, the slip dress is liberating women all over the world. This particular dress allows women to speak for themselves. With it, women are proving that they should not be looked at as sex objects and have the right to wear whatever they please.

This up-and-coming staple piece of spring street style can be mixed with masculine pieces and sneakers to give it a more casual and urban appeal. Although, some women have decided to pair them with furs and strappy heels for a more romantic and classic look. If you want to rock this rebellious dress, I suggest starting with a simple approach. To get comfortable with the idea of wearing an actual slip in public, try wearing a cami dress first. Add a leather jacket overtop to give you some coverage and a rock n’ roll aesthetic! ASOS and Topshop are great sources for basic slip dresses. Once you're ready to graduate to the real thing, then try taking a peek at what Nasty Gal has to offer.

2. The Power Pout

Spring time is normally a time for pastels and bold colors. However, this trend takes color to a whole new level! Not limited to just vibrant pastels, the “Loud Mouths” trend is open to deep maroons, purples, and reds as well. Moving away from the no-makeup makeup look typical of Spring, this year will be characterized by simple eyes, smokey brows, and statement lips.

One great thing about this trend is that it gives women the green light to start incorporating glossy and stain lips into their everyday lives, which gives us all a break from the matte lip trend that exploded last season. If you’re interested in this trend, check out ColourPop Cosmetics, who recently launched an entire satin lip collection.

3. Twist It Out

Although this trend originally started on the runways, it has taken off due to the Kardashians rocking boxer braids all over social media. Braids, something usually labeled as urban and belonging to Afro-American individuals, has now become more of a norm. Dutch braiding is the most popular braid style as of right now. However, styles seen on the runways dictate that all different types of braids and twists will be in full bloom this season. In addition to ponytail twists and crown braids, hair jewelry could be just thing to give your hair some extra oomph! Lace the jewelry in-between your braids or twists for a romantic and royal touch.

4. Big Flares Don’t Care

This season, we see a new pant silhouette emerging. A stark contrast for the skinny jean, the ultra 70's flare jeans are back in full swing. I'm sure we all thought we'd never see these jeans again! However, there are some new and interesting takes on the retro pant. We see that cropped flares are becoming more of a street style staple than regular flares. Cropped flares allow women of all body shapes to try out the trend without having to fully commit. They still give you the same effect as regular flares but with a cleaner and more simplistic approach. Nonetheless, flare jeans give women the best of both worlds⏤comfortable fit and voluptuous curves. They give the illusion of a fuller hips and elongated legs, especially for pear-shaped and hourglass figured women.

One of the main reasons why you should try this trend is to give yourself some much needed change! I think the skinny jean wore out its welcome not long after it came out. So for this spring, it’s out with the old and in with the new (or sorta new). Say goodbye to skinny jeans and the leg workouts needed to rock them (for now anyways). You should try to get your hands on them now before the Coachella craze begins. Check out J.CrewBCBG, and Zara to find your perfect pair of flares.

5. Shoulder Strike

Off the shoulder tops and dresses will be a must for this spring season. Originally seen in the Chloé and Christian Dior runway reveals, these tops are now seen on fashion bloggers of different styles. The best thing about this trend is that it can be flawlessly mixed with other styles. Mix them with ripped jeans for a creative-edgy, casual look or pair them with culottes for a minimal and classic feel. Feeding off of the previously mentioned 70's revival trend, the off-shoulder pieces can also be paired with flare jeans for the ultimate 70's throwback.

One of my favorite things about this trend is that it is also introducing a sleeve shape we have yet to see in fashion’s recent years. An off the shoulder top or dress with dramatic, bell-shaped sleeves brings this wonderful sense of romance and whimsy to any outfit. If you’ve been looking for unique off-the-shoulder pieces, TopShop and Nasty Gal both have a great selection.

6. Lace It Up

Although this trend has had a slow build up, it is coming at us full force this spring. We were first introduced to the idea of showing off our pedicures when mules became the hot item of the fall season, however, this spring is full of new beginnings. Adding on to the espadrilles trend of seasons past, these shoes gives us more to aspire to. Lace-up sandals, heels, and flats add far more interest and appeal to spring attire than heeled loafers or plain sandals ever could. They're the perfect mix of an ankle bootie, wedge, and gladiator sandal all in one! So let your pedi and calves be the stars this season. Opt for a stylish lace-up sandal over a pair of sneakers or flats.

If you want to get your hands on these chic shoes, Steve Madden and Anthropologie offer a wide range of styles. Zara is another wonderful source, if you're looking for more affordable options.
